July 2004 | Market StrategyAs in much of the former Soviet Union, elections in Kazakhstan can be noisy affairs, and the parliamentary polls on 19 September are proving to be no exception. The opposition Assandi Times newspaper has already been fined US$370,000 for 'defaming the reputation of the president's administration' - a move which has attracted the condemnation of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe - and a senior figure in the opposition Ak Zhol party, Bulat Abilov, has been found guilty of libel, and will therefore not be able to contest the elections.
