Hard Graft Aids Recovery

Despite the resignation of John Githongo as President Mwai Kibaki's anti-graft advisor on February7, the Kenyan shilling has tended to strengthen over the past week to KES76.70/US$. This follows concerted attempts by the Kenyan government to grasp the nettle on corruption. In addition to the formation of a new prosecution team to push ahead with graft trials, the President has since sought to improve his government's efficiency and accountability with a cabinet reshuffle and changes in key civil service personnel in the security, defence and finance ministries.
