Tung's Departure A Double-Edged Sword
March 2005 | Market StrategyThe apparent resignation of Hong Kong's highly unpopular Chief Executive, Tung Chee-hwa, is something of a double-edged sword for the territory's political and business environment. At stake is the future of democracy in Hong Kong, and the durability of the 'one country, two systems' model under which the territory enjoys widespread autonomy from the mainland. Tung's as-yet-unconfirmed departure comes more than two years before his second five-year term was due to expire in July 2007. This has raised fears that the authorities in Beijing will appoint a new Chief Executive for a full term ending in 2010, rather than choosing
