Trade Outlook Bleaker, But Not Ominously So

BMI View: With demand in the G3 markets unlikely to perk up anytime soon, and signs that shipments to Asia may weaken as well, we expect Taiwan's exports to come in for some pressure during the remainder of 2008. However, largely thanks to easing oil prices, we do not expect to see any debilitating contraction in the island's long-standing trade and current account surpluses and believe improving cross-Strait relations should help buttress the external accounts going forward.
