Fonseka Arrest: Potential Implications

The arrest of Sarath Fonseka, the opposition candidate in the January 26 presidential polls, augurs badly for freedom of speech under the extended mandate of re-elected President Mahinda Rajapaksa. While jailing Fonseka for an extended period would have negative consequences for Colombo's standing with the EU and the US, the recent treatment of dissenting journalists and Colombo's ready access to funds from China and India makes it a distinct possibility.
