January 2011 | Ratings UpdateThe massacre of eight bus passengers in central Honduras on January 6 is the most recent incident in a string of violent crimes related to the illegal drugs trade. Like many of its regional neighbours, Honduras is plagued by organised crime and brutal street gangs (known as Maras), with much of the violence linked to narcotics as drugs are trafficked from South American producers to consumers in the US through the Central American corridor. We expect violence to remain elevated for the foreseeable future as Mexico's increasingly aggressive stance towards the drugs trade pushes cartels and gangs further south
