As expected, North Korea carried out its first-ever nuclear test on Monday, triggering widespread international condemnation, and depressing South Korean financial markets. Several other Asian markets also fell, but we expect them to hold up, provided that there are no further alarming developments. The absence of a bigger sell-off reflects the fact that investors had already factored in the test, after Pyongyang issued a warning last week.
