In our last Sovereign Risk Ratings report, we warned that political risks were set to increase across the Asia-Pacific region in 2007, owing to an election-heavy calendar. Yet at the same time we stated that Asia's external debt markets will remain resilient, owing to strong macroeconomic fundamentals, which are supporting or improving 'Ability to Pay' scores. We retain this view, despite the global correction in Emerging Market assets, which has mainly hurt Asian equities rather than currencies or foreign bonds. Although global economic growth is set to moderate slightly in 2007, the overall outlook is still sound, and Asia should see another good year.
